THE STUDY OF ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC CHANGES OF MASTICATORY MUSCLES IN CLASS ¥² MALOCCLUSION DURING FUNCTIONAL APPLIANCE THERAPY

Abstract
Integrated electromyographic (IEMG) activity was recorded in 25 children with Class III malocclusion during functional appliance therapy. EMG activity was recorded with surface electrodes from anterior Temporalis, posterior Temporalis, anterior Masseter, posterior Masseter, and suprahyoid muscles in rest position, maximum biting, and during chewing.
The findings of this study can be summerized as follows
1. In rest position, IEMG values of the anterior Masseter showed significant ¡Æ decrease at 3 months of treatment than pre-treatment and showed significant increase at 6 months of treatment than pre-treatment.
2. In rest position, IEMG values of the supra-hyoid muscle increased significantly at 6 months of treatment than pre-treatment.
3. When maximum biting, IEMG values of the right anterior Masseter and right posterior Temporalis decreased significantly _,at 3 months of treatment than pre-treatment and IEMG values of the right anterior Masseter and left posterior Temporalis increased significantly at 6 months of treatment than at 3 months of treatment.
4. When maximum biting, IEMG values of the Masseter increased signifcantly after 3 months of post-treatment than at the end of treatment and decreased significantly after 6 months of post-treatment than after 3 months of post-treatment.
5. When chewing, IEMG values of the left anterior Masseter, rightanterior Masseter, Ieft posterior Masseter increased significantly after 6 months of post-treatment than after 3 months of post-treatment and IEMG values of the supra-hyoid muscle increased significantly after 3 months of post-treatment than the end of treatment.
6. When chewing, IEMG values of Temporalis, Masseter, and Supra-hyoid muscle did not showed significant difference between treatment periods.
